Volume X Issue VII
TO PROCRASTINATE OR NOT

Put yourself in this picture. You're walking between the railroad tracks listening to a Walkman and for some strange reason you have this urge to look behind. Your worse nightmares are realized as you see a train bearing down on you! Impact time is estimated at seven seconds! Chances are you're not a procrastinator. It's either jump left or jump right. No analysis, no weighing of the options, no politically correct associations. Instead just like the Nike slogan. "Just do it". Jump!

So why do we procrastinate? There are a host of reasons. Usually fear is the underlying cause. Fear of failure, the unknown, even of success. It's a word nobody really wants to have associated with their life. The fact of the matter is we all do it and yet if done properly it can actually be a good thing. How so you say? Since all of us have an equal number of hours to work with (24) and we simply can't do everything, we must procrastinate on some items. The key to high performers is their ability to selectively procrastinate on the low value activities to free up time for their goal achieving high value activities.

There are times when deep thought and careful consideration are required in making key decisions in your life. However, often people get bogged down with " paralysis by analysis" syndrome. It becomes a great excuse for procrastinating on a decision that requires action. To help with the procrastination issue I suggest you add the "seven second rule". Make a decision in seven seconds on the low importance issues. Go with your gut feeling. It's rarely wrong. Get off the fence in a hurry. You will be amazed at the internal feeling of control, confidence as your decision making muscle builds with use.

Start today. Be a proud procrastinator! State it to the world, but then follow-up with a new attitude to mentally delete those low value activities.

P. S. Parents try the "seven second rule" on your kids. State to them " Make a decision in seven seconds or I'll do it for you!" Watch how quickly they jump off the fence when they see you follow through and make a couple of decisions for them. You're actually educating them on the value of making quick decisive decisions.

What about attempting to use the "seven second rule" at work with co-workers in a non-threatening way. Example "OK, let's agree that have a decision in two minutes on this issue" and make sure the group holds to this commitment.

Be an active procrastinator starting tomorrow !!!
